Jobless claims continue to fall

The labor market is slowly beginning to show signs of strength.

According to the most recent figures released by the U.S. Department of Labor, weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped to 348,000 last week – down 13,000 from the previous week and marking the fewest number of initial claims in four years.

The report showed that last week’s decline was the fourth drop in five weeks, also suggesting that fewer workers were being laid off and hiring was beginning to pick up.

The recent announcement comes on the heels of the January unemployment rate announcement, which showed that there were improvements in the labor market. Employers added 243,000 net jobs last month, and the national unemployment rate dropped to a three-year low of 8.3 percent.

Locally, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent in December 2011, the fourth consecutive monthly rate drop and the lowest rate in three years.
