Disaster Unemployment Assistance 
 

If Hurricane Matthew affects your business and you are shut down for a few days or a few months, your employees may be eligible to receive Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). Find below some frequently asked questions regarding DUA and its impact on businesses. As always, we appreciate your partnership, and we are available to help you through this time.

Your employees may be eligible for state unemployment insurance (UI) benefits or federal disaster unemployment assistance (DUA) benefits if they are unemployed for any period of time as a direct result of Hurricane Matthew. If your employees inquire about potential benefits, please direct them to the MyBenefits portal or advise them to call 1-866-831-1724. Also you may be eligible for DUA benefits if you are self-employed or a small business owner who lost income due to the disaster. To file for benefits, you can also create an by going to the MyBenefits portal or by calling 1-866-831-1724.

DEW may request information from you in order to properly evaluate a claim for UI or DUA benefits. Please respond to such requests timely and thoroughly so DEW can ensure that benefits are promptly paid only to those claimants eligible to receive them.

A contributory employer’s tax rate will not be affected by benefits an employee receives while unemployed as a direct result of Hurricane Matthew.

Rapid Response

If you employ more than 50 workers and your operations are impacted by Hurricane Matthew, DEW’s Rapid Response team is available to provide your business with on-site assistance to help affected workers get jobs, training, and/or income support.
