Employment and Workforce Executive Director William Floyd’s Statement
June 2025 Employment Situation
Columbia, S.C. – “Temperatures are hot in South Carolina and so is the job market, as the number of people working hit another record level in June of 2,459,338,” said the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) Executive Director William Floyd. “The unemployment rate remained at 4.1% while the labor force grew by nearly 5,900 and job growth was widespread across industries.”
“In contrast to the national employment picture in June, the bulk of South Carolina’s job growth came from the private sector,” said Floyd. “While federal, state, and local governments added around 300 jobs during the month, private sector employment grew by an estimated 5,500 month-over-month and by approximately 63,400 over the past year.”
“Employment growth in the services sector continues to outpace the goods sector through June,” said Floyd. “The Healthcare sector accounted for more than 21% of the state’s private sector employment growth over the past year, and the Accommodation and Food Services sector saw a record high of more than 251,000 jobs.”
“One of the key components to a growing job market is making sure South Carolinians are aware of the diverse employment offerings in the state,” continued Floyd. “From manufacturing to healthcare, technology to utilities, infrastructure to arts, South Carolina is continuing to see large and small businesses grow in our state.”
“Every month, including hot summer days, DEW strives to increase awareness about our state’s wide range of career opportunities by, for example, directly connecting individuals in rural areas with job openings at events and festivals in those communities, promoting the benefits of youth employment through the YES job board and related programs, or linking employers and educators with the help of Regional Workforce Advisors and other workforce partners,” concluded Floyd.
