"I started as an EMT as soon as I got my driver’s license and stayed in that role, which I loved, for a couple of years before I decided to study to become a paramedic. I’m proud to say I’ve been in this job for several years. It was a natural transition, and now I get to perform advanced medical procedures and have way more responsibilities on the job.

Some shifts are less dramatic than others, sure, but while they are never predictable, I feel like they are always important. I might be helping to save someone’s grandparent after they had a fall, or someone’s parent when they had a heart attack, or someone’s sibling who got into a nasty car accident--the list goes on. I never forget how connected we all are and how life can change drastically in the blink of an eye. Being a paramedic is public service to the extreme, action-packed, and full of empathy. This is a fast-paced job with high rewards, and I will never, ever take my job for granted."

Paramedics administer basic or advanced emergency medical care and assess injuries and illnesses. May administer medication intravenously, use equipment such as EKGs, or administer advanced life support to sick or injured individuals.*
